Chris Moneymaker - the
amateur wins!
Chris Moneymaker was a 27-year-old
accountant when he won the 2003 World Series of
Poker No Limit Hold'em Championship! For only
a $39 dollar investment he went on
to win the highest payout ever for the
event, $2.5 million.
This Cinderella story is credited with
vaulting the game into national attention, and the
resultant surge of new players entering the World
Series of Poker! After all, if an amateur can win,
why not me? And the game has caought on all over,
especially on the Internet.
Amazingly enough, this amateur had only
recently learned the game, and had been playing
poker exclusively online for about three
years. The 2003 World Series of Poker was
the first live tournament he had ever
played! What a win!
